Yesterday, Barack Obama announced the nomination of Francis C. Collins, the former director of the Human Genome Project, to lead the National Institutes of Health. In the June 25, 2001, issue of TNR, Collins and his colleagues argued that knowledge of the human genetic code does not explain everything about the human condition.
