You haven't seen the documentary "Islam vs. Islamists: Voices from the Muslim Center" even though it was funded by a $675,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. And why haven't you seen it? Because PBS--what I and many other folk understand to be the Palestine Broadcasting Service--won't let you. Of course, if you haven't seen it, I haven't either. But Deroy Murdock did see it , and he thinks it opinionated but fair. My God, how many programs on public radio and public television are opinionated and unfair! My estimate is that this is so because PBS has a distinct viewpoint on what is fit for television, and it does not include showing the life-and-death struggle for the soul of Islam which, alas, may now be won by the Islamists because they have the upper hand. One reason for this is that "enlightened" government-financed television is not permitted to tell that truth. By the way, I had lunch last Friday with the Muslim dissident, Irshad Manji and I have since read her book, The Trouble with Islam Today. It is insistently sympathetic to the ethics of Islam but insistently critical of its dogmatism and intolerance. I had also seen her documentary, "Faith Without Fear" (yes, actually, on public television). Her pious mother is the hero of the film, not because she is inclined to heroics but because she tries to mediate between her daughter's free spirit and the tradition that has been captured by the fanatics. I hope that Irshad will soon be writing for TNR. P.S.: Apropos my posting on Irshad and her mother, see this piece in Friday's Times about Iranian women who don't like being told what to do by the Muslim male patriarchy. The Iranian police have stepped up their campaign against "immodest dress," apprehending women on the street, in broad daylight, for wearing clothing too tight, too short, too revealing. These are drive-bys; drive-by acts of harassment. The police say they round up about 150 women a day and bring them to "detention centers" where they learn their lesson. Last month, the regime sentenced 6 female gender-rights advocates to prison for deigning to protest the lack of equality in Iran. There is something about this subjugation of women--the indignity of public harassment on the street, being told what one can and cannot do--that reminds me of the way black people were treated in this country.
