So what else is new? Fatah and Hamas met on Sunday to end the mayhem in Gaza. They did not reach an agreement. This is par for the course. Still they might. And, if and when they do, it will be broken on the morrow. In the meantime four people were killed today in Gaza and 40 wounded. The AP called one incident "especially grisly." Hamas seized an officer in a Fatah security force and "took him to the roof of a 15-story building" from which he was thrown to meet his Maker, which he presumably did. Maybe pushing opponents off roofs is becoming a fashion. "A Hamas activist was thrown off the 12th floor of a building" and was dead on arrival on the street. At least, he wasn't thrown from the roof. The two other murders of the day were more hum-drum, except that one of the dead was a Hamas preacher. He was taken away from his house alive and was delivered to a hospital well, yes, dead. Just as an afterthought about the effectiveness of international agencies: Ha'aretz reports that Jakob Kellenberger, president of the International Red Cross, issued a statement ("a rare statement") announcing that "the safe return of the three kidnapped Israel Defense Forces soldiers is a top priority for the organization." Wow, what if weren't a top priority! What if it were the tenth priority. Or the twentieth. It is now almost one year since these abductions. And Kellenberger is still demanding--no, probably asking oh, so politely--"the kidnappers for a sign of life." Ha'aretz also reports that Holland wants a larger role in Middle East diplomacy. And what exactly does Holland bring to the table? Why doesn't it worry about its own problems with extremist Muslims instead of pushing its way into a game that already has too many players?
