Ben Carson thinks Donald Trump is “actually a very intelligent man who cares deeply about America.”

In officially endorsing Trump, Carson explained why many people might not see it that way: “There’s two different Donald Trumps. There’s the one you see on stage and the one that’s very cerebral, sits there, and considers things very carefully.” When asked about Trump’s previous accusations that Carson was a child molester, Carson said that stuff like that “happens in American politics.” Trump said Carson would play a “big, big part” in his campaign.

As Alex Shephard noted, the endorsement is an odd one. At CPAC this year, Ben Carson made several comments about the ridiculousness of this year’s Republican race that appeared to be directed at Trump. “What we have to do now is just sort of calm down and use the amazing intellect that God has given us,” he said. “You don’t need to have much of a developed brain to simply react, to react in fear. Animals can do that, lizards can do that. We are human beings.” It appears Carson is happy to settle for lizard brains.
