You got an inkling this was coming when Huckabee did duty as an after-hours stage prop at a Trump “veterans” rally last week. Or even before that, when the former Arkansas governor showed off his Trump tie at a Republican debate. But now Huckabee might as well be stumping for the Donald.
As Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski reports, Huckabee has not only thrown the weight of his own evangelical bonafides behind Trump’s newfound Christian piety, he’s also questioned the faith of Trump’s leading rival, Ted Cruz, calling him a “phony.”
“Donald Trump has certainly changed his view on abortion,” Huckabee told NewsMax Prime, “he is pro-life now, but you know his view evolved over 20 years, not 20 months, or 20 minutes.” Cruz, on the other hand, is the type of person who “changes their view based on which way the polls go or changes their speeches based on where they are geographically.”
Say what you want about Cruz, but he’s at least more convincingly devout than Trump, who this weekend put money onto the communion plate at Mass.
