One Direction is now going in four directions.

The British boy band, originally assembled a la Frankenstein’s monster by combining failed solo candidates on the TV singing competition The X Factor, is reportedly extending its hiatus into a permanent split. Sources told Us Weekly“The 1D thing just ran its course. They’ll remain friends, but they are exhausted and want solo careers.”

They lit up our world like nobody else, but nothing has been the same since the original fifth member, Zayn Malik, left in March. Fans left their hearts open after his departure, hoping that One Direction-minus-one would be the same, but now their hearts will stay empty for days.

In this One Directionless world it’s important to remember that there’s nothing to be afraid of, even when the night—or floppy-haired boy band—changes.
