On this day 58 years ago, German novelist Thomas Mann passed away at the age of 80. Mann, a Nobel Laureate and the author of The Magic Mountain, moved to Los Angeles, California, with his family in 1942. There he composed Doctor Faustus before returning to Europe ten years later.
